Hyperstone, member of CML-group, is a fabless semiconductor and microprocessor design company, that was founded in 1990 and is based in Konstanz, Germany. Hyperstone’s products include microprocessors based on the unified RISC/DSP architecture and microcontrollers for flash memory applications. The product scope ranges from packaged devices such as ASSPs (Application Specific Standard Products) and ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) to licensing of intellectual property (IP), reference designs and development support.

 Hyperstone’s products and solutions target markets such as digital imaging, mobile networking, Internet appliances, flash memory solutions, communications, automotive and industrial solutions. Applications include digital cameras, voice processing, modems (CATV, ISDN, PSTN), printers, scanners, industrial control, robotics, video games, navigation, video control units, embedded web-servers, CompactFlash™ memory cards, biometric solutions, navigation systems, MP3 players, and many more.

 Hyperstone’s success is based on the unique invention of the unified RISC/DSP processor architecture. The Hyperstone core architecture provides both a fast RISC processor for data and control functions as well as a powerful DSP unit for efficient algorithm execution. Therefore, Hyperstone’s design requires less silicon, is more power efficient and requires lower software complexity compared to conventional dual-core designs. The major advantage of the Hyperstone core is that the RISC and DSP functions are designed as a single processor model and instruction stream, rather than a combination of two different cores on a single piece of silicon.

More recently, Hyperstone successfully diversified into the market of flash memory controllers. Based on the original RISC core and Hyperstone’s competence in systems design of flash memory applications, Hyperstone developed a family of flash memory controller. Flash memory cards using Hyperstone controllers require little power and offer highest transfer rates at the lowest manufacturing cost. Applications are CF™ cards, Secure Digital (SD) cards, MultiMediaCards™ for PDAs, personal communicators, digital cameras, MP3 players and voice recorders. Additional applications include flash disks and disk-on-modules (DOM). Hyperstone provides turnkey solutions ready for mass production including schematics and all necessary firmware.

 Hyperstone will soon release its core as software IP for SoC design and ASIC prototyping.
